In the heart of the Woodstock neighborhood in southeast Portland, this historic home was built in 1912 and was once the Old Homestead Market and Gallery. We opened our doors in the fall of 2010. In 2017, we expanded our doors and opened The Homestead Annex (on the corner of 41st and Woodstock), which is an additional space for our younger students. We believe in both structured and unstructured learning, an enriching environment for each child, and positive learning experiences that involve students, families, and teachers. The Homestead uses constructivist approaches to learning, as students are able to create new understandings of how things work and expand their thinking through problem solving. We also give students opportunities to teach one another through this approach. We value multicultural education, as it encourages children to respect and value the diversity in the classroom and in the local and global communities.
